Our Heritage & Legacy

Osmania University, established by the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, is one of the oldest and largest higher education institutions in India.

The University was founded in 1918 with the aim of providing higher education in the medium of Urdu. It has since evolved into a multilingual institution offering instruction in English, Telugu, and Hindi across a wide spectrum of disciplines.

Located in the historic city of Hyderabad, the campus spans nearly 1600 acres and is renowned for its iconic Osmania University College of Engineering, Arts College, and sprawling library that houses over 500,000 volumes.

1918

Foundation

Osmania University is established by Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, making it the first university in India to have Urdu as the medium of instruction.

1938

Engineering College

The Osmania University College of Engineering (OUCE) is established, becoming one of the oldest and most prestigious engineering colleges in India.

1968

Golden Jubilee

The University celebrates its 50th anniversary with the inauguration of several new departments and research centers, expanding its academic scope.

  • Centre for Advanced Research in Biotechnology (CARB): Focused on genetic engineering, drug development, and agricultural biotechnology.
  • Advanced Centre for Research in High Energy Materials (ACRHEM): Conducts defense-related research in collaboration with DRDO.
  • Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS): Premier social science research institute focusing on policy analysis.
